Film Director Marielle Heller ’97 to Serve as 2019 SJND Commencement Speaker
Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School is delighted to announce SJND Alumna and Hollywood Director Marielle Heller as our 2019 Commencement Speaker.
Marielle is an Alameda native and a graduate of the SJND Class of 1997. An aspiring actor at the time, she studied theatre at University of California, Los Angeles, after which she spent a year at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London. Early in her career, Marielle starred in local productions at the Magic Theater, American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and the La Jolla Playhouse.
Perhaps best known for her directorial work, Marielle has directed three films, including her debut film, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, and the 2019 Academy Award-nominated film starring Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Her most recent project, titled, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, chronicles journalist Tom Junod’s interactions with Fred Rogers, played by Tom Hanks, and how the encounter impacted the journalist's life. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is set to be released in November 2019.
Marielle and her actor/director husband Jorma Taccone currently reside in New York with their son, Wylie.
The 2019 SJND Commencement Ceremony will be held in the Kelly Gymnasium on Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m. Additional event information will be announced in the coming weeks.
