'Alameda Derby' Crab Feed & Auction a Win Across the Board
Derby Darlings and Southern Gents flocked to the Kelly Gym on February 2 for the Alameda Derby: SJND’s 38th Annual Crab Feed & Auction. This year’s Derby-themed event had guests dressed to the nines, sporting their best fascinators, seersucker suits and pastels, complete with mint juleps and dancing to cap off the night.
The nearly-sold out event featured both a 50/50 raffle and a raffle for a gorgeous pair of diamond studs donated by Seelenbacher Jewelers, silent and live auctions, and a decadent dessert auction. This year’s live auction sparked friendly competition with a variety of adventurous and luxurious items, including a Kauai vacation, a getaway to Yosemite and a private flight to wine country. Also included was a unique piece of St. Joseph Basilica history, donated by the Ratto family: an original church pew from the 1920s.
In addition to raising critical funds for tuition assistance, scholastic development, and athletics, each year the Crab Feed closes with a Paddle Raise in support of a specific cause at SJND. This year, we were excited to introduce and raise funds for our new mobile IDEA Lab, made up of several cutting-edge technologies, including fabrication, robotic, and audio/video production tools, most of which will be mobile so they can be shared across departments. We are proud to share that we raised $35,000, exceeding our goal and allowing us to receive another $30,000 in the form of a matching grant from the HEDCO foundation.
In total, the evening grossed a record $136,000 in support of SJND students and activities. SJND would like to thank our 2019 Crab Feed & Auction Sponsors, without whom the event would not have been such a success.
