Class of 2016 Receives Blessing of Family and Friends at 134th Commencement

On the morning of June 4, as the SJND Band played Pomp and Circumstance, the Class of 2016 filed into Kelly Gymnasium to begin their next chapter of scholarship and service in the world. Interim Principal Milt Werner and Reverend George Alengadan conferred 113 diplomas to the new graduates, several of which received special distinction during the ceremony:

Principal's Leadership Award:  Dalia Quezada
Spirit of the Pilot Award:  Daniel Ratto
Inspired by Christ Award:  Abigail Leong
Fides et Caritas Award:  Alexia Aranda
SJND Award for Excellence:  Emily Lara
Valedictorian:  Aaron Ramos
Salutatorian:  Alexander Elfar
SJND Santone Scholarship for College Success:  Alejandro Argueta and Natalie Scout Coberg

In addition to celebrating academic excellence and community contributions among the graduates, distinguished alumni shared words of wisdom with them. Serial entrepreneur Ben Park ’80 recalled his memories at SJND, including Mr. Lippi’s history class, yearbook, and Senior Night at Great America. He shared how the principles of knowledge, empathy, communication and persistence impacted his life.

As a citizen of the world, ask yourself “what can I do to make a difference in the world?” Whether that impact is large or small, use empathy to think about others who may benefit from your skills and knowledge.

Never stop learning. Travel as much as you can. Be self-sufficient but understand when you need help.

Finally, if you believe in something, never give up until you achieve the goal. Keep your faith. Have a plan and execute to get there.

Aaron Ramos ’16, who will be attending UC San Diego in the fall, delivered the valedictory address to his classmates.

Each of us will be contributing to a brighter future, because each of us understands that the foundation on which we will build the world relies on upholding our values, and most importantly, the value of loving one another.

Members of the Class of 2016 will soon be headed to colleges and universities throughout the country. Read a partial listing of student admittances at
