Coach Tony Fong Named NCS Honor Coach
Congratulations to longtime SJND Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Tony Fong who was awarded the NCS Honor Coach distinction at the NCS Cross Country Meet of Champions on November 23, 2019. The Honor Coach award is the highest honor a coach can receive in our section and “represents the best of high school education and athletics,” per NCS.
Coach Fong is a dedicated coach and mentor who has coached at SJND for over 20 years, leading SJND Cross Country to become one of the top programs in the state. Under his leadership, the Pilots have earned five state titles since 2012. Additionally, many of Coach Fong’s athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level.
“Cross country is a very demanding sport and I develop a training program that prepares each runner to take on the challenges of racing,” Coach Fong said about his coaching philosophy. “I also try and balance sports with their education to help develop values and life skills that contribute to their success in the future, including in and out of college,” he added.
In addition to serving as head coach of the SJND Cross Country and Track & Field programs, Coach Fong serves as the race director and BCL league representative for cross country, and hosts a summer running camp through SJND’s Summer Discovery program.
An avid runner himself, Coach Fong has completed 100 marathons.
Upon receiving news of his award, Coach Fong shared, “This could not be done without the support of everyone at SJND and our awesome community. Saying thank you is not enough.”
