Distance Learning at SJND: Theater Students Get Face Time with Professional Actors
Students in Ms. Rosi’s Musical Theater classes are taking advantage of this distance learning time to connect with Hollywood and Broadway stars throughout the country.
“In trying to find ways to keep my theater friends busy and translate my classes online, I put out a call on social media to see if anyone I knew who works in Hollywood or the Broadway industry would be willing to share some time to speak with my classes,” explained Ms. Rosi. “I got an overwhelming response! So I've just been filling some of the three-hour class time with my friends sharing their stories and answering student questions,” she added.
On Monday, March 23, the Musical Theater 3 class spoke with Broadway's Ben Bogen (“Frozen,” “Jersey Boys”). On Tuesday, Musical Theater 2 spoke with Austin Scott, who just finished a two-year run playing Alexander Hamilton in “Hamilton” on Broadway. Unfortunately, Austin explained, his new musical, “Girl from The North Country,” just closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Next week, the Musical Theater Classes will have the chance to speak to Broadway's Ellyn Marie Marsh (“Kinky Boots,” “Pretty Woman,” “The Rose Tattoo,” etc.) and Hollywood actress Christina Elmore (“Insecure,” “The Last Ship,” “Fruitvale Station,” “Twenties”).
“I wanted to find a way to bring my students some joy and release as they are all cooped up and separated,” said Ms. Rosi. “I thought having the chance to speak to industry professionals would further their learning, bring them together for a shared experience and give them something exciting and cool to look forward to.”
