Dream Flight benefit raises $81,000 for Pilot scholarships
On October 15, alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and students gathered at the Claremont Country Club in Oakland for an evening of dining, dancing and giving. The second annual event was a great success with 160 people in attendance. Together we raised $81,000, up from $64,000 last year, for deserving young Pilots who may not otherwise afford an SJND education.
Keynote speaker Natalya Caraballo '07, with a legal career in social justice endeavors, spoke about the opportunities she had been given at SJND to succeed, which catapulted her to future success. She gave a shout out to several of her former teachers, coaches and counselors.
“The values of service, faith, and scholarship, that I had learned as a student at SJND stayed with me long after I graduated. I believe Martin Luther King Jr. said it best when he described, ‘Intelligence plus character, that is the true goal of education.’ I am confident that if he had been able to experience the SJND community, he would agree with me that it is the perfect combination of this goal: intelligence plus character. We all know that SJND provides students with a superior education and produces graduates who go on to attend some of the most prestigious universities; however I know that SJND’s true success is found in the integrity of its students and the moral code that is embedded in each of us and which drives us to have a positive impact on the world.”
SJND Senior Darne Duckett '17 gave a heartfelt and moving speech, which spoke to how much he cherishes his SJND education and is grateful for the tuition assistance he receives.
“You don’t know how much I am thankful for you donors here at SJND. Your contributions allow me and all these other students to experience the excitement and love that St. Joe's has to offer. Without help there wouldn’t be opportunities for kids like me to have a brotherhood and make best friends, to have an excellent education, win two state championships, experience Kairos, go on to college, and to turn me into the leader I am today. Your love has shown me love to spread to others who need that love.”
The evening was dedicated in memory to the late Jim Kelly Sr., one of the great supporters of this school. His son Kevin Kelly '79 spoke about Jim and his wife Rosaleen Kelly's '51 support to SJND and Catholic education.
To top off the evening, guests danced the night away to the jazz stylings of The Suggestions, a band made up of four of our own talented alumni: David Dupart ’03, Chris Massoud ’02, Akili Peyton ’02 and Jaime Guzman ’06.
