Fuel Cassandra's Dream #PilotsGive
Support a future human rights advocate.
In 2017, Cassandra Deleon transferred to SJND from St. Elizabeth High School in Oakland.
While difficult to change schools at first, Cassandra explained, she dove head first into life at SJND.
Now a busy junior balancing AP courses and extracurricular activities, Cassandra is a member of the Women's Soccer Team and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, not to mention her involvement with numerous clubs. This spring, she will attend the annual Close Up trip to Washington, D.C. where she will interact with students from across the country, explore historical sites with her classmates, and learn more about U.S. history and politics. Cassandra also hopes this trip will increase her understanding of many modern-day human rights and social issues, one being the hundreds of thousands of kids in the American foster care system.
“I really think about the kids that are my age, and how they are living and how they might be suffering,” said Cassandra. “I think, we are so similar: we are the same age, maybe they also have ambitions for a bright future, but they don’t have the same opportunities as me because they are in the foster care system. That’s really pushed me to think about how I can help,” she added.
Cassandra believes issues within the foster care system require more exposure and education, and hopes to learn more about support programming offered for foster children.
“Support of SJND will help even more students like me support their communities...Giving back to SJND sparks a desire in [the students] to give back and helps further student ambitions,” said Cassandra.
