A Great Year Ahead - A Message from Interim Principal Milt Werner
Thank you to everyone who attended the second annual St. Joseph Community Block Party this past weekend. Needless to say, I was impressed by our convivial community, including parishioners, elementary and high school families, faculty, staff, and alumni. Many thanks to our parish staff and Father George Alengaden for organizing and hosting this wonderful event. It was a beautiful evening and provided me with a festive way to meet many of our alumni, parents and students before the school year kicks off.
I officially began at SJND at the start of July. Blessed with skillful collaborators—Assistant Principal of Student Life Julie Guevara and Assistant Principal of Academics Jessica Park—I was able to hit the ground running. Together, we have laid the groundwork for a year that will enhance teaching, learning and community so that this year’s Pilots will thrive in and beyond the classroom and be challenged for college success.
This summer, SJND has had much excitement. Our Pilot runners racked up awards in the Alameda’s Fourth of July R.A.C.E. running race and our school band was awarded for their performance in the Alameda Fourth of July parade. Under Armour’s and Stephen Curry’s basketball camp for some of the nation’s top guards was hosted at SJND’s Kelly Gymnasium once again this summer. Our Summer Discovery program for K-8 students was in full swing when I arrived with a record number of participants in a variety of camps including academics, sports and a variety of LEGO and arts programs. Special thanks to our SJND teachers who participate and teach in the Summer Discovery program.
Recently, SJND was favorably ranked in 2015 Niche rankings—SJND ranked among the top third of private high schools in our region and #23 among the nation’s Catholic schools. Niche aggregates education statistics and online reviews from a number of sources to rank K-12 schools across the nation. Thank you to our happy alumni, parents and students whose positive reviews contributed to our outstanding numbers on Niche.
I look forward to a productive, exciting year with our parents, students, leaders, teachers and staff. By continuing to raise the bar in our academic and co-curricular programs, our teachers and students will carry on the strong Pilot traditions of college success and lives of purpose.
If you would like to meet with me, I encourage you to make an appointment through my assistant Tina O’Connor.
