Mary Carmen Reid ’17 to Spend Summer at Stanford Lab
SJND is proud to announce that junior student Mary Carmen Reid '17 was accepted into the Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR). SIMR is a prestigious eight-week summer internship in which high school students are invited to perform research on a medically-oriented project with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers. From June through August, Mary Carmen will conduct hands-on research under the direct guidance of a one-on-one mentor at a top class lab.
Mary Carmen will study liver cancer with an emphasis on hepatitis under Dr. Mindie Nguyen's team at Stanford. “I am excited to meet other students my age interested in STEM and especially medicine, because it is the field I want to go into,” she says. “I am very excited to participate in cutting-edge technological advances in medicine and increase my exposure to laboratory practices, science mentors, and medical research.”
Her parents, Carmen ’91 and Matt Reid, expressed their appreciation for SJND:
Our family would like to sincerely thank SJND for preparing our daughter Mary Carmen so well that she was accepted into the SIMR internship program. A huge thank you to Ms. Taylor, who has prepared her so well in science, inspired her throughout the past few years, and been a fountain of inspiration for her. Also, we recognize that her involvement with Speech and Debate, and Mr. Leahy's commitment and enthusiasm this year, has been paramount in her personal growth. Also, a big thank you to Ms. Stein who has also supported her in leadership roles and encouraged her to take chances, Dr. Bailon for her expert guidance and encouragement, and ALL of her other teachers who have provided both a solid academic and moral foundation.
