Mary Carmen Reid ’17 was recently awarded a national award and $20,000 scholarship through the Girls Inc. National Scholarship program. In addition to being selected, she was invited to speak at the 2017 Girls Inc. New York Celebration Luncheon, featuring principal honoree Hillary Clinton.
Secretary Clinton delivered the keynote speech during the luncheon at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel and accepted an award for her advocacy on behalf of girls and women. Over 1,000 supporters celebrated the National Scholars, and raised funds to support programming and opportunities for girls in the United States and Canada. “It was a wonderful experience, being in the city and meeting so many amazing women,” said Mary Carmen.
Mary Carmen then took the stage to speak about her experience with Girls Inc.:
Girls Inc. solidified my love for science and technology. From acting out speciation in science to building water filters with our engineering mentors, the times I spent learning and exploring with friends at Girls Inc. were invaluable. These experiences and others inspired me to pursue classes and explore subjects I never would have imagined. I have learned so much about myself and gained the confidence to go after my dreams -- and as a mentor and role model, help other girls to do the same.
Mary Carmen will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall where she plans to study Nutritional Sciences and Public Health. Congratulations!
