Men’s Baseball Headed to the NCS Finals!
On Wednesday, May 28 the SJND Men’s Varsity Baseball team, No. 3 seed in the NCS tournament, traveled to the College of Marin to face the No. 2 seed Branson Bulls in the semi-final round of the North Coast Section Championship Baseball Tournament. In the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded and two outs, Senior Robert Hansen forced what would be the last Branson batter to ground out to 3rd base for the final out and capture a 3-2 Pilot’s victory! Steve Manzo ‘16 was the winning pitcher for the game with 6 strikeouts. He gave up 2 runs, only 1 of which was earned. It was a great day at the plate for senior Elijah Fisher (3-4) and sophomore Colin Karch (2-3 and 2 runs batted in). Karch also ended two Branson rallies with great defense in right field. This is the first time in school history that the SJND baseball team has advanced to the NCS final game.
This is the third time SJND and Branson have met in the NCS Championship playoffs this year. Branson won the first contest in the NCS finals for women’s volleyball and SJND won the second match up in men’s basketball, in a game where SJND freshman Jade’ Smith made two free-throws with 0.04 of a second left on the clock to seal the win. Men’s Baseball secured the rubber match with their thrilling victory on Wednesday!
The Pilots will take on Head-Royce in the NCS finals at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 30 at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga. Admission is $9 for adults and $6 for students… GO PILOTS!!!
