Pilots Rock the Island at Alameda’s July 4th Events
Pilots were well-represented in Alameda's annual Fourth of July parade, with two SJND floats weaving through the island on the longest parade route in the nation. The SJND Pep Band float rocked out to earn second place in the transported school band category, awarded at a special ceremony with Alameda Mayor Trish Spencer. Thank you to Janet Gonzalez ’15, Adam Reyes ’15 , Quentin Fernandez ’15, Quinn Owyang ’18, Rosie Compton ’17, Katherine Carino ’17, Garrett Monteiro ’16, Jake Bowers ’17, Ruben Souza ’16, Maribelle Martinez ’13, Matthew Porter ’15, De'Andre Gaines ’15, Terryck Carter ’12, Martin Martinez ’16 and Kaleb Cervantes ’16 for participating this year!
Our “Float of Champions,” featuring SJND championship athletic teams who won a league, NCS, or state title during the 2015-16 school year also represented our Pilot pride well during the parade.
Prior to the parade, SJND’s cross country team ran in the city's 5K race, a tradition that recalls Mayor Ralph Appezzato and benefits the Midway Shelter for women and children in Alameda. Of the men, Nick Ratto ’12 came in second with a time of 00:16:16 and Cooper Teare ’17 took third with a time of 00:16:16. Of the women, Emily Perez ’19 took third place with 00:19:55. With the help of our students, Athletic Director Chris Pondok and parent volunteers, the athletics and music departments successfully celebrated Independence Day with our Alameda community.
