Pilots Win State Championship!
The SJND Pilots dominated Renaissance Academy in SJND's fifth visit to the state basketball championships, winning by 25 points, 57-32.
Pilots star Temidayo Yussuf '14 was unstoppable with 21 points, and he already had a double-double at halftime with 11 rebounds.
Lamont Banks added 14 points for the Pilots.
The Pilots went on an 8-2 run to start the game behind four points from Banks, and SJND pushed its lead to double-digits in the second quarter with a dominating defensive performance. The Pilots' 2-3 zone completely shut out the Wildcats (24-8), allowing them no points in that quarter.
Yussuf was especially explosive in the third quarter, scoring nine points. At the time, he had outscored the entire Renaissance team, 19-16. SJND ended the third quarter with a 41-16 lead.
It was the second time in four years that the Pilots (31-5) have won the CIF Division V boys basketball state title. St. Joseph also won in 2011, and has reached the state title game four straight years. The Pilots have won the state championship in 1991, 1992, 2004, 2011 and 2014.
