Principal's Message, June 2014

Simon Chiu

What a wonderful last two weeks of school we had! It was a whirlwind of activity as we took time to honor our students throughout the school for their academic and co-curricular achievements, with a special focus on the graduating Class of 2014. The final week of school was highlighted by a trio of activities for our seniors: Baccalaureate Liturgy, Grad Night and then Commencement. Congratulations to our graduates and my thanks to all of their families for their partnership with SJND over the last four years as we have walked together to help their children grow, mature and learn. A special congratulations to our Salutatorian, Isabela Reid (University of California, Berkeley), who captured the spirit of her class during her remarks at our Baccalaureate Liturgy and to Valedictorian Amelia Khoo (Brown University), who challenged her classmates to soar during her comments at Commencement.

As I reflect on the 2013-14 school year, I am so happy with the many improvements we continue to make to our school. From the launch of our Biomedical Sciences program to a successful musical at a new theater space to state championships in both cross country and basketball, this school year marked a continued march towards improvement of all of our programs. As we look towards next year, I am looking forward to the introduction of Mandarin and Computer Coding courses as well as a Speech and Debate team. Additionally, we will continue to focus on our student life program with the creation of a new Director of Student Activities position to help guide our students and faculty moderators in this area.

In terms of physical improvements, this summer will see the conversion of a classroom in Marianist Hall (Room 201) into a Drama Rehearsal Studio, complete with new wood flooring, wall mirrors and lighting fixtures. My thanks to those of you who contributed to the theater classroom project at our Crab Feed paddle raise this year.

Best wishes for a restful summer. Hopefully you and your family will have an opportunity to spend some time with each other without the usual hustle and bustle of school. I’ll be around for most of the summer, taking some time off in the middle of July, but working here throughout the summer to prepare for the next school year. Thanks for your continued partnership and support of SJND!
