SJND Attends WE Day California

On Wednesday, February 25, thirteen SJND students and two teachers attended WE Day California, an annual event that engages and educates young people with a passion for service. WE Day is an initiative of Free the Children, a global non-profit that connects youth with international charitable work.

To attend the summit, student members of Interact, SJND's student club dedicated to service, completed a global service project. For their project, SJND club members led a school-wide "Penny War" in which classes competed against one another to earn the most for the cause. After a week of fundraising, Interact collected over $1900 to benefit Free the Children's "Adopt a Village" program, which buys livestock for families in rural Kenya.

At WE Day, students learned about educational, social, and economic empowerment, and participated in conversations about human need, musical acts, spoken word, a "WE Day dance," and more. Speakers and performers included singer Cody Simpson, Grammy winner Colbie Caillat, actress Marlee Matlin, and Kid President.

SJND's Interact President Lea Akima shared her reflection on WE Day. "I knew about the good work our club was doing, but had no idea there were so many other students doing service. But going to WE Day and seeing thousands of other kids who want to make a difference made me realize that, with a force that big, there's no telling what kind of change can happen."
