SJND Hosts 28th Annual Island Classic Basketball Tournament
This year marks the 28th anniversary of a tournament which has showcased some of the Bay Area’s finest basketball talent over the past few decades, featuring players such as Calvin Byrd, J.R. Rider, Jason Kidd, Ray Young, Justin Davis, Alex Harris, Antonio Kellogg, Damian Lillard, just to name a few.
The Island Classic was started by legendary SJND coach, the late Frank LaPorte. The tournament started as a four-team showcase that featured the three high schools on the island, and another marquee program was invited to round out the foursome. Every year a new team was invited. Coach LaPorte named the tournament after a close friend and SJND supporter, Mr. George Chaix. After Coach Laporte passed in 1997, his name was added in honor of his dedication to the SJND Basketball family. The tournament is now called the Frank LaPorte & George Chaix Island Classic.
George Chaix (April 20, 1922 – October 13, 1993)
Frank LaPorte (January 14, 1933 – September 12, 1997)
Over the years the “showcase” became so popular that in 2012 the SJND Athletic Department decided to make it an eight-team tournament. The Inaugural Tournament Champion was Montgomery High School of Santa Rosa, who beat the SJND Pilots by a score of 49-40. In 2013, the Pilots were the Tournament Champions, beating Acalanes High School 74-38. In 2014, Stuart Hall were the tournament Champions beating host SJND 68-55. In 2015 SJND won the tournament again, beating Urban 66-54.
Last year, the Island Classic went back to its original format as a four team showcase and featured a strong team from Modesto Christian. This year, we welcomed Lincoln (S.F.), The Urban School, Alameda High School, and Encinal High School. Results from the 2017 games are as follows:
