SJND Seniors honored at Youth Voice on China Awards Gala
Seniors Alex Fisher-Wagner ’16 and RJ Pimentel ’16 were recently honored at the 2016 Youth Voice on China Awards Gala in San Francisco. The Youth Voices on China online video contest is the 1990 Institute’s signature education initiative to foster global awareness among young people. The theme of the video contest was to create a message to the White House with a cultural exchange idea for U.S. & China youth. Alex and RJ’s video was an open letter to President Obama discussing why technology is a valuable tool to develop a positive, dynamic and innovative relationship with China. You can watch the video here.
Alex and RJ were named national finalists in the contest and were included in a group of emerging media makers as part of the prestigious CAAMFest (Center for Asian American Media) film festival. The awards gala featured a screening, awards presentation, reception and social media panel. They also received a special Proclamation from the California State Legislature Assembly signed by Assembly member David Chiu in recognition of their work as global citizens and leaders.
Alex Fisher-Wagner ’16 said, “It was really great to do research on a project that I was truly passionate about. Creating it in a movie format connected a different passion, and was an added bonus to the whole experience. Being selected as a national finalist by professionals in the media, who deal with Chinese-American relations, was a huge honor.”
