VAPA Department Wraps Up Eventful Spring Season
Congratulations to the Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department on a successful spring season! Each year, the department hosts the annual Spring Festival of Visual Arts and Spring Festival of Music events so that students may showcase their art and photography, and perform their learned and original music compositions.
For the third year in a row, the department supported Oakland Elizabeth House with an art sale at the Spring Festival of Visual Arts. All Visual Arts students created postcard-size art to sell to the local community. As an added bonus, this year the department utilized the new mobile IDEA Lab to print artwork on mugs.
We are proud to share that proceeds from the sale totaled $1,000, which will be donated to Oakland Elizabeth House to support women and children who have experienced poverty of homelessness, violence, and addiction.
In addition, the SJND Band returned to California’s Great America this spring to perform in the annual Music in the Parks Festival, receiving an “Excellent” rating for their performances.
Events also extended outside the Bay Area. After representing SJND at the California Art Educators Conference last year, this year Mr. Mark Ritter traveled to Boston for the national event. During his time at the National Art Educators Conference, Mr. Ritter, who has taught at SJND for over 25 years and serves as the VAPA Department Chair, presented to 70-80 educators from across the U.S. Topics from his presentation included ways to advance basic watercolor skills, technology integration and how to move towards a choice-based curriculum.
Next up on VAPA’s schedule, keep an eye out for the SJND Band performing in the Alameda Fourth of July Parade on July 4!
